I and I will be holding a panel discussion on Tuesday, July 25 entitled “What it takes to succeed as an entrepreneur in China”. Our panel will be comprised of experienced entrepreneurs who have not only built successful companies, but have also managed to secure significant overseas investment. We are privileged to have with us Forrest Zhang, CEO of Tixa, Justin Mallen, CEO of SRT, and Fritz Demopolis, CEO of qunar.com. Their bios are listed at the bottom of this email.

Finally, this go round we have teamed up with Amcham to co-run this event. There will be lots of cheap eats and plenty of beer, all for the low low price of 50RMB. You heard it here first.

Panelist Bios
Justin Mallen, CEO Silk Road Telecommunication
Justin has been a successful entrepreneur on the world’s economic frontier for over a decade. He first came to China in the early 1990s to start a textile-based export firm, and has since made the transition to the IT sector. In 1999, Justin established SRT as a telecom network services provider focusing on network infrastructure and security, outsourcing of IT support services, telecom software development and aggregation of value added content. SRT currently is one of the largest independent Internet Data Centers in Eastern China and works closely with the government to provide telecom and IT support services for the Chinese National Software Base in Zhejiang.
Over the last two years, SRT has expanded to include the development of telecom software and operation of voice value added telecom services. SRT’s software team has developed several voice content based platform solutions that are currently being released through China Mobile in nearly a dozen of China’s provinces, including the three largest mobile markets of Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Guangdong. SRT’s voice value added services have created a vibrant alternative to the successful SMS market in China. SRT’s ever-expanding customer base includes such companies as Cable and Wireless, China Mobile, Microsoft, Yahoo!, UT Starcom, Dell, H-P, General Motors, Motorola, Sharp, Zhejiang Public Security Bureau and many other SMEs, domestic and multinational alike.
Justin has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, CNN, South China Morning Post and numerous publications within China. He is also a frequent speaker at numerous IT industry conferences and has been invited to be a visiting professor at both Stanford and Berkeley business schools. Justin graduated with honors in Chinese History from Bowdoin College. He grew up in San Francisco, and always knew that he wanted to work in international business. Justin has greatly appreciated the opportunities he has found working in the world’s fastest growing country.
Fritz Demopoulos has been involved in the Chinese media, internet and wireless industries for over eight years. He is currently a cofounder and CEO of Qunar.com. Previously, Fritz was also SVP of Business Development at Netease.com. Prior to Netease, in 1999 Fritz cofounded and became CEO of internet sports portal Shawei.com. Financially backed by Intel Capital, Softbank and IDG, Shawei grew to become China’s largest sports web site and was subsequently acquired by Tom.com in 2000.
